Before your 2020 calendar gets too full, I wanted to announce Vancouver’s first Computational Design Hackathon to be held at UBC’s School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, Saturday, January 18th, 2020.

Over the last couple years, Hackathons have developed into excellent venues for rapidly testing the feasibility of novel ideas, discovering workflows, and growing professional communities. VanCity Computational Design’s 2020 AEC Hackathon aims to introduce these benefits to Vancouver’s architecture and engineering community. We welcome all with an interest in computational design to attend and contribute to this rapidly expanding field of design!

The event is aimed at two potential groups of participants: Firstly, students looking for opportunities to sharpen their computational skills, and, secondly, industry professionals from the fields of architecture and engineering interested in sharing their expertise and meeting other talented individuals active in the community. Over the course of a day, teams of 4–6 will develop site specific, parametric structures for sitting in, enclosing, and sheltering a Vancouver community garden. The exact challenge details and site information will be released prior to the event. All participants will need to bring is a laptop and some knowledge of either Grasshopper or Dynamo. Technical support and troubleshooting will be provided.

About VanCity Computational Design:

VanCity Computational Design is a meet-up established to support the adoption of computation and automation in the AEC industry. Throughout 2019, we’ve been gathering together to share experiences, sharpen skills, and network. Events are monthly, and alternate between workgroups and networking events. During the past year, members have expressed interest in contributing to something larger. The 2020 AEC hackathon is our first event, and the main goal is to have fun. Like our meetings sprinkled through the year, participants are sure to leave the hackathon with improved skills, and inspired for their next project.

Lastly, if one can’t make it to the hackathon but is still interested attending VanCity Computational Design events, we invite readers to check our group page for more information about our 2020 meet-ups as they are announced.
